Hi Gareth..
I just added some details to their fleetlist and some of them perhaps helps your memory...
Kind regards
Kent

The company are still trading in the shipping-business, but have no ships of their own anymore.... There are 10-12 people employed in the office in Esbjerg.

Hi Kent LARS Erhron thats it :hello: He left to do something with his trawler and fishing if I remember correctly preferred that I guess, floating about in the Great Belt  I only knew after ard '82 with the Clipper ships, Elisabeth Clipper was built with the Pisa Canal traffic in mind(she had a bloody great rubber rubbing strake around her !) but that never happened.Used to fix her with coal during the UK miners strike into Wivenhoe and Rowhedge, crazy days then with coal/coke ships coming in. Wonder if Paul remembers ? Cheers Gareth

Helene Clipper (II) was a different beast to the others. She had a 1100HP MaK MU451AK "reduced" to 500HP, and 1100tdw. 4 dereks capable of lifting 3 tons in tandem. Steel pontoons on hatch #1 wooden hatchcovers over the 3 remaining hatches. A very small stow away hatch between hacth #2 and #3 which was used as Bathtub here and there. No air conditioning and we were 1 time sailing into the persian gulf summer time.

On the contrary to the others, it wasn't boxholed and a superior sea vessel to the danish build jokes of ships, 20 years or so younger.

Helene Clipper (II) either made men out of boys or broke them in the process.:thrasher:

How do I know?, I sailed apprentice and chief engineer on Helene Clipper (II) and chief engineer on Karen Clipper for approx 4 years all together. And Helene was sooo much better though Karen had much more automation and less physical work for the deck crew. Those who still remember woodden hatch covers, then add 4 dereks with only hoisting winches, the positioning done by hand with "ropes" (I don't know the words but I guess you know what I mean) will know what I am talking about! And in rough sea if the dereks broke loose, I have seen it happen, the poor guys have to go on deck and try to get control of a free flying 15 meter long derek.

Besides that, Elisabeth Clipper was also different to Karen and Mette. Elizabeth was designed and build for 1 single long time charter. Unfortunately, the designer didn't know much about ships, so when the ship was finished it was too large to come to the destination and the charter was lost. It was a very poorly designed ship, with an equal build quality.

How do I know? My father owned parts in Helene Clipper (I), Helene Clipper (II), Karen Clipper, Mette Clipper and Elizabeth Clipper. And he has been Master on them all.

Helene Clipper (I), it was registered under that name but sank shortly after and there had not been time enough to actually put the new name on the ship. The master at the time of sinking is my uncle.

Her exact position: graveyard
