Kiel-Canal
Hi Grahme, the locks on both sides are necessary due to the tides of the River Elbe, while the level of the Baltic Sea is being affected by wind conditions. They allow a constant waterlevel in the Kiel-Canal.
More of the Kiel-Canal can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiel_Canal
