Sailing ship "Marnix"
Good evening from Rostock,
maybe you can help me. I`m interested in the history of the sailing ship, on which my great-grandfather sailed as master... I want to give some information of the ship that my great- father sailed on as captain from 1877 to 1887 in the saltpetre trade. The ship`s name was "Marnix", but in a painting one can see the full name "marnix de st aldegonde". The ship belonged to the Belgian shipping company Theodore C. Engels & Co. of Antwerpen. While searching in the internet I found today even a photo of a 3 masted ship of the same name and by the same shipping company, but this may not be the same Ship is like this of my grandgrandfather, but is quoted in the Context of the first breaking of the Scheldeblokade in 1863. I consider it relatively unlikely that this ship was still alive in 1887, but who knows? I got a Photocopy of a painting of the Marnix, which I can post later. Maybe the rigging etc results in further conclusions. What is interesting to know would be information of the shipping company and if something can be found in the archives at Antwerp, like logbooks and other records of this ship still exist. The whole subject is of interests to, because I wanted to become a sailor in 1970 myself, but it was denied, because I got relatives living in the BRD and I would maybe "jump ship" I`m sailing since 1961 and am a fan of historic ships, owning today a historical yacht which was built in 1923, still in original condition 20sqm unit Schwerin dinghy 6m length, beam 2 m One important thing yet in the end - Our family posses letters, which my great-grandmother wrote during her two voyages she made in 1886. posted at 1886. One can get an impression of the everydays life onboard ships at that time Kind regards Robert Schroeder |
