Default Sigrid S - 1948 - OUHC - D/58 - (Imo 0000000)

M/S SIGRID S Svendborg, BRT 499 - Built 1948, steel-construction.
On route from Arsuk to Narsak with general cargo.
Grounded May 12-1968 at Greenland's west coast, foundered/CTL

A maritime inquiry took place in Julianehåb on May 17th-1968:

Around noon, approx. 12:00 Sigrid S. sailed in quiet, clear, cloudless weather around a 1/4 of a mile south of Qarssussat, then held towards the Northern Mågeløb. The current was running with the ship at a speed of approximately one knot. Due to ice conditions she was sailing at/in the Southern side of the sail route, and the engine was set on slow ahead. Sigrid S. later held onto/into the Northern side of the sail route.
At 12:35, Sigrid S. was south of the buoy with the upward peak that marked the underwater island, when the port side of the ship collided with an underwater rocky outcrops.
At the collision the ship sprang a leak, and it quickly became clear that the ship's pumps could not prevent her from sinking. It was therefore decided to put the ship aground. This was done about 13:00. Nobody was hurt in the incident and all the crew members were taken aboard another vessel that came to their aid.

Later the ship was later inspected/checked to see if she could be salvaged, but unfortunately she was estimated to be a CTL-case = Constructive Total Loss.
Now you know the reason for that you still today, now 47 years later, can see the wreck of SIGRID S is still laying on her final resting place up there in the Arctic’s where things are really long lasting.
