Does anyone know why many of the Union Transport fleet were registered in Ireland in those days? Something to do with who was financing the ships or just a convenient flag at the time?

Ireland was a convenient register to use because it still ran the old Home Trade. Prior to that, when I joined them, they were registered in Singapore but the guy in Singapore who handled the registrations reckoned that because the ships were in Europe they were foreign going, didn't understand Home Trade, never mind their physical size and he wanted the appropriate sized crews, including a Sparks. I changed the Jupiter to the Irish flag when we were in Avonmouth.
