Default History

KAMBODIA (OXTH)
Built 1943/47 in Copenhagen "B & W" Build 667.
2x10 CY.B & W DIESEL, HK-14000 M.LST.STL. 9BH.
2dæk. T + T. L-510, 0 B-65, 3 D-37 8
GRT 10461 NET 6061 DWT 12400
Speed 16

But build with much more enginepower than needed for that speed... She had an extra screw on deck which they could put on in a drydock prior to a journey where much higher speed were needed and then she could outrun any thing out there in her lifetime... and the few times she sailed with the fast-screw-fitted she did outrun them and that took quite a lot of captains on bigger and stronger ships by surprise and were very amuzing for her crew to do... THe only ships able to follow her was newer/bigger navy-ships... She was many times logged/plotted to run well over 30 knots per hour but no one could get the max-speed of the Kambodia out of ØK/EAC... They kept that as a secret to them selves....
The need for that kind of speed was mostly when she traded in different war-time-zones of the World. SO these kind of loads, and also charters, were often paid for by one of the parts in a specific war... For example USA chartered her for some years to deliver supplies for the troops in Vietnam, so she went a lot up the river to Saigon and other places down there in the conflict-zone.
She was chartered to various conflict-partners all over the world during the 50-60-ties.... But most of her war-times-trading are very hard to find out even today and back then it was almost impossible for the public to get any kind of info of here where-about´s and doings... That was kept verysecret by ØK/EAC, the governments and the danish journalists... And it is even said, thatalso the relatives to the crewmembers onboard her had a had time to find out where their love-ones were or had been and what they had been up to...
It was not everybody that could get a job on board the Kambodia, but plenty of course very much wanted to, the ship had a lot of prestige among the sailors in the danish merchant fleet back then... and for many reasons of course, but one of them were of course the monthly payment that were put into your "Book" by the company... Each day the ship were inside a conflict zone the payment were tripled so the people onboard her made a lot of money....
All in all it gave a lot of prestige and respect among colleagues if you were
fortunate to be both safety and professional - approved to be offered a hire board Kambodia ... and many hoped , in vain , for many years, being offered a hire on board in just her, but it was obviously a minority who ever got the offer ... Also, because the ship was so attractive , so many of those who succeeded in getting a job board Kombodia , they retained the job on board her for many years. There was in fact not very high turnover of staff , once they had been approved to be employed on board in her ... You have had to make major mistakes in the service , not to be asked whether you wanted to be on the ship next trip aswell... And the few who did not achieve to be asked to come on board again , yes , they got usually an quarantine from EAC / EAC in force for 99 years , they became, in popular terms blacklisted in the company and with such blacklisting of a person , then it suddenly also became difficult for this person to get jobs in other of the big companies who also were members of the same

shipowners association as the ØK/EAC....
You could never prove that large merchant shipping lines in the large shipping association shared its internal black lists and personal lists of its employees between each other, but it was a well-known problem, that a blacklisting in one of the major shipping companies suddenly could cause you nor could get a job at any of the big companies in the same association ... So it was thought-provoking to assume that the internal "negative" crew lists were leaked and / or shared between them as a normal routine-job ... But nobody ever could prove it...

Enough about this and Kombodia right now ....
There are many more stories to tell about the good ship Kambodia , but they 'll come in here , little by little ... I'll write a little more later ... And there are perhaps others of you out there who also knows something about her life and movements in this world, in this case do not hesitate to tell about it here ....

"BRANDENBURG". Purchased 1947 by the Danish Government, (ex) "BRANDENBURG". Should have been delivered to Germany during the war, but the ship was never finished building and outfitting before the war was over due to both sabotage, working-slow-actions and material shortage.
The same desteny happened to another newbuilding on B & W to the germans allthough she was not as big as Kambodia... That ship was also sold from the danish state to a private company around 1947.... it was bought by DFDS and named Venezuela. Her engines was also "oversized" for a ship at that particular size just like the Kambodia was, but not to the same degree and I´ve never heard, or been able to find any info, about the ship being used in the same way as the Kambodia, so if she did, then it is a even bigger secret than her bigger "sister-ship´s" trade were...
