'Gravity Highway' collided with tanker 'Maritime Maisie'
Car carrier Gravity Highway, which is under construction in Hyundai Mipo
Shipyard, collided with chemical tanker Maritime Maisie while on sea trial around 0215 LT Dec 29 13, some 9 nautical miles off Busan. 27 crew chemical tanker with 29337 tons of flammable chemicals on board caught fire after collision. There were many more people on board of car carrier, because vessel was on sea trial with shipyard staff and crew. All 91 people from both vessels rescued. 16 rescue boats, Navy ships and helicopters were engaged in rescue operation. It’s not clear though, if it was necessary to evacuate people from car carrier, and vessel was abandoned. Authorities said fire was put under control by 1000 LT, firefighting still going on. No chemicals spill reported, some 4000 tons of paraxylene and acrylonitrile said to burn in the fire. Some crew members of the tanker sustained light burns or abrasions.
