Lysblink Seaways to be scrapped in Scotland

April 21st, 2015 Holly Birkett Containers, Europe 0 comments
London: The DFDS Seaways containership that ran aground off Scotland in February is to be scrapped after repairs were deemed too expensive.
The Lysblink Seayways (160 teu, built 2000) will be demolished at DRB Marine Services at Rosneath on the river Clyde, local newspaper reports say.
The singledecker has been in the Inchgreen Drydock at Greenock since early March.
It ran aground on February 18 while carrying a cargo of paper waste from Belfast to Skogn, Norway.

DFDS Seaways has confirmed that its 7,409 gt cargo vessel Lysblink Seaways, which grounded in northwest Scotland on 18 February, is to be recycled.
After passing through the Sound of Mull en route from Belfast to Skogn with a load of paper, the ship failed to make a course change and hit rocks near the village of Kilchoan. Local residents confirmed that the vessel had suffered considerable damage. The vessel was towed to Inchgreen Drydock in Greenock in the first week of March.
On Monday DFDS confirmed that the hull damage was too extensive to repair. The ship has been towed to DRB Marine Services of Rosneath, on the opposite bank of the River Clyde, for recycling.
The grounding incident - one of several in the environmentally sensitive area in recent years - prompted demands from local politicians and community associations for maritime safety improvements and the reinstatement of an emergency towing vessel in the Minch.
