40,000 tonne large Cypriot bulk carrier was headed toward shallow water
adding infoSeconds from running aground in Storebælt
27-04-2015 08:00:00 Traffic monitoring in the Storebælt prevented a large cargo ship going aground on Friday morning. A 40,000 tonne large Cypriot bulk carrier was headed toward shallow water. The ship, with a depth of 10.4 meters, had joined VTS before Zealand Point and followed Route T south through the VTS Storebælt area. "After Agersø Flak there is a site where it is only 9.8 meters deep, and the carrier does not steer clear, but continues to the shallow area," said captain Kim Egelund Rasmussen, who was on duty in the VTS. The ship has a draft of 10.4 meters and switches to the recommended route Hotel, bound for Riga in Estonia. As it passes a northbound ship, the carrier turns towards low water depth. The shipmaster calls the ship on the radio, but there is no response. Not until the third call, where VTS recommend a hard starboard turn, the ship turns, avoiding ground. As the ship passes the area, it happens at a distance of 100 meters. With a speed of 11 knots, it takes only ship about 18 seconds to complete 100 meters.
